The Playstation 4 was a somewhat compulsive purchase, and I’ve never had the feeling of having backed the wrong horse as strongly. Not even when I chose the Dreamcast over the Playstation 2… Yeah, OK. That was worse.
You see, the eighth generation saw me choose the Xbox One. I will speak of that elsewhere. I will only say that it propelled me away from console gaming pretty sharply, and it was quite some time until I picked up my Playstation 4. It was like a breath of fresh air. Simple, clean interface, games that could run well and a game restore system that didn’t crash your machine every time you tried to use it.
The controller was, shockingly, far better than the Xbox One’s first horrific effort, its only downside being the slightly too short analogue sticks. This is easily fixed by third party stick extenders. What isn’t easily remedied is the relatively low battery life of the controller. It’s obviously due to the touchpad, speaker and that baffling light they’ve stuck on it. I mean honestly, if you’re playing in the dark, all you can see is its glow reflect back at you from the screen and you can’t even turn it off!
So far, the essential games for the PS4 are:
- Helldivers

- Overwatch
- Battlefield 4
- Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls
- Planetside 2
- Until Dawn
- Drive Club
- Journey
- The Order: 1886 (you know what? I liked it!)
